Last night Leeds United lost at Elland Road to Spurs in the FA Cup 4th round replay. Leeds put up a good performance but in the end the Premier League gulf in class was evident and Leeds ended up losing 1 - 3. Leeds had plenty of endeavour and spirit but Premier League Spurs have spent million of pounds on some of the best players so it was inevitable that class would eventually prevail.
Leeds can be proud though that they have raised their profile and won over new friends. The extra money generated from this game was probably at least £0.5 million so when that is added to the first Spurs game and of course the Manchester United game Leeds have probably had about £2 million of extra revenue which is a significant amount for a League One team.
In addition, the Leeds players will have had a taste of playing at the top level so I hope that they will realise that they have to put 100% effort into getting promotion this year. If Leeds don't get promotion this season then it will be a disaster so it can't be allowed to happen.
All games are important but the game against Hartlepool on Saturday will be a big test of their mental attitude. Lets hope that Simon Grayson is able to motivate them to get a result.
One final point is that I thought that last nights game showed that Jermaine Beckford is not premier league quality. He struggled to make an impact and the striking quality and pace of Defoe were far to superior to that of Beckford. Having said that, most strikers would struggle to match the skills of Defoe but I think Beckford needs to think hard about a move to a Premier League team as he could easily be out of his depth. He will probably decide to have the money rather than the fame, but I think I might do the same if I was him !
